Georgia (12-0) enters off a 31-23 victory at in-state rival Georgia Tech, while Alabama (11-1) converted a 4th and goal from the 31-yard line to defeat rival Auburn, 27-24 in The Iron Bowl. Why Georgia can cover

The Bulldogs have been unstoppable for the last three seasons and look to become the first college football team to win three straight national championships since Minnesota did it from 1934-1936. Georgia has been especially effective away from the confines of Sanford Stadium, having won eight straight games and covering in six of them. Their last loss was in the 2021 SEC Championship Game against Alabama, which featured eventual Heisman Trophy winner, Bryce Young.

For Georgia to succeed this week, quarterback Carson Beck will need to continue his efficient play. He’s thrown for 3,495 yards and 22 touchdowns on the season, while only having thrown six interceptions and having been sacked eight times. Tight end Brock Bowers, widely known as the most talented player at his respective position in college football, is expected to return after a one game absence (ankle). On the season, he’s caught 51 passes for 661 yards and six touchdowns. The Beck-to-Bowers combo could be too much for Alabama’s defense, which has shown cracks lately, to slow down. See which team to pick at SportsLine

Why Alabama can cover

Alabama was the last team to hand Georgia a loss, beating the Bulldogs in the 2021 SEC Championship. The Crimson Tide have rarely been underdogs over the last decade-plus, but they have won and covered at a 5-2 clip in seven games since 2008. They have won seven of the last eight meetings between these teams, and they have covered seven times during their current 10-game winning streak.

Quarterback Jalen Milroe kept Alabama’s playoff hopes alive with a touchdown pass to Isaiah Bond on fourth-and-goal from the 31-yard line in the closing moments of the Iron Bowl last week. Milroe completed 16 of 24 passes for 259 yards, two passing touchdowns and 107 rushing yards. Beck has thrown an interception in five of his last eight games, and it is difficult to overcome mistakes against Alabama. See which team to back at SportsLine.
