On Wednesday morning, Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit organization, delivered wreaths to the Texas State Veteran Cemetery in Abilene. This marks the beginning of preparations for a ceremony that will take place on Saturday, December 14. Volunteers and community members gathered to unload over 200 boxes of wreaths, ensuring everything is ready for the special day of remembrance.
The upcoming ceremony will feature a speaker and serve as an opportunity to honor the brave men and women who served in the military. It’s a time to reflect on their sacrifices and express gratitude for their service to the country.
Joseph David Cardwell, representing Wreaths Across America, shared that this day is about more than just placing wreaths on headstones. It’s a moment to pause and remember the veterans laid to rest at the cemetery. Cardwell emphasized that while Memorial Day and Veterans Day are significant, this time of year offers a special chance for the community to come together in tribute.
“This is a time to really honor the veterans,” Caldwell explained. “It’s a special time of the year when we can all come out here, lay a wreath on the headstones, and show respect for what they’ve given for their country.”
This year, nearly 3,000 wreaths will be placed by volunteers, but Caldwell noted that the event is more meaningful than just laying wreaths. Volunteers will say the name of each veteran as they place the wreath and offer a brief prayer for the individual and their family. “It’s really touching,” Caldwell said, underscoring the emotional significance of the event.
