U.S. Army Welcomes Lockheed’s Precision Strike Missiles With Long-Range Strike Capability

In a significant stride towards modernization, the U.S. Army has received the initial shipment of Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM), replacing the legacy Army Tactical Missile System. The delivery, following successful testing, signals a major milestone in the Army’s 24 modernization programs scheduled for deployment by the end of 2023.

The PrSM, designed for Joint Force commanders, offers a 24/7, all-weather capability, countering the enemy’s combat maneuver and air defense operations. The rapid development of this capability showcases the Army’s use of new acquisition authorities, ensuring swift deployment of improved equipment to soldiers. The PrSM program is integral to the Army’s long-range precision fires portfolio, addressing evolving global challenges.

Strategic significance amidst global shifts

The PrSM’s versatility is underscored by its capability to launch from multiple systems, making it crucial for countering Russian and Chinese technologies. The program aligns with the Army’s modernization priorities, responding to shifts in global dynamics. The recent withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty allows the PrSM to exceed its current range, enhancing its effectiveness in diverse operational scenarios.

Originally a competition between Lockheed Martin and RTX, the PrSM program faced challenges during the technology maturation phase. With Lockheed Martin leading development, the program has entered the engineering and manufacturing development phase, receiving contracts for early operational capability production. Future plans include an enhanced seeker, increased lethality, extended range, and a maritime, ship-killing capability.

As the PrSM program advances, competition intensifies with Lockheed Martin and an RTX and Northrop Grumman team vying for further advancements. The Army’s proactive approach to modernization ensures readiness to meet evolving threats. The successful delivery of the PrSM marks a key milestone in bolstering the U.S. Army’s precision strike capabilities, reinforcing its commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements in the defense landscape.
