Northern Lights Possibly Visible in Northern Texas/oklahoma Panhandle Tonight

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — The northern lights could be visible in the northern Texas/Oklahoma panhandle tonight for the third time three months.

A G3 (Kp7+) — or strong magnetic storm — watch is in effect for tonight.

This means there has been a coronal mass ejection from the sun’s surface. This is not alarming as it happens regularly.

This area of electromagnetic radiation emitted from the sun interacts with the earth’s magnetic field and creates northern lights as well as other impacts on certain electronic systems.

We should have perfect viewing conditions this evening with clear skies forecast. However, it is a full moon, so there will be extra light in the sky making it a tad more difficult to discern the faint glow in the sky.

The best time to see them is between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.

We want to see your photos, so if you happen to catch the aurora borealis this evening, click here to upload them to Chime In.

Here are some of the more recent times the aurora borealis was present in the panhandles. It’s rare for it to make it this far south.
