DEA partners with Deep East Texas nonprofits for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

DEEP EAST TEXAS (KTRE) – Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The DEA along with local collection sites are encouraging everyone to participate.

Last year the DEA collected 1.2 million pounds of medicine through their take back program. Many pharmacies and law enforcement departments will collect unneeded and unwanted prescription medicine throughout the U.S., giving people a proper way to dispose of those items to prevent pollution and substance abuse. Each location has restrictions, but what is not accepted at all are syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs.

“When you dispose of medicines, especially in an incorrect way like throwing them in the trash can or flushing them down the toilet it can become part of the environment,” said Abby Baker, coalition coordinator for The Coalition in Angelina County. “Especially with just throwing them away, people can access them in the trash cans.”

Here are a list of drop off locations in Angelina and Nacogdoches Counties:

People in Angelina County can drop off unused, unwanted and expired prescription medication at the Diboll Police Department: 400 Kenley St. or the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office: 2311 E. Lufkin Ave.

People in Nacogdoches County can drop off unused, unwanted and expired prescription medication at the CVS Pharmacy: 1424 North St., Garrison Police Department: 330 S. B Avenue or Nacogdoches Coounty Sherriff’s Office: 2306 Douglass Rd.
