33-Year-old Italian Restaurant Beloved by Berkeley Students is Closing

A 33-year-old Italian restaurant beloved by UC Berkeley students is closing.

Pasta Bene’s last day at 2565 Telegraph Ave. will be Dec. 15, owners Farhad Jalali and Ladan Sanjani wrote in an announcement provided to the Chronicle.

“We are finally retiring,” they wrote. “To our frequent patrons, whose names, favorite dishes and preferred tables we know, you brightened our place when you stepped inside.”

Pasta Bene operated for 20 years in downtown San Francisco and then 13 years in Berkeley. Blocks away from the UC Berkeley campus, it became a haunt for college students who came in for hearty, affordable bowls of spaghetti and meatballs and pizza in a low-key setting. The restaurant offers $10 pasta plates for lunch.

“We welcomed you as freshmen, we watched you during your academic lives and admired 13 generations of UCB graduates,” the owners wrote.
